NO KĀKOU
- Our Story -

Hālau Nā Mamo O Ka Liko Maile O Kohala was founded in January 2012 by Kumu Hula Kapua Francisco, whose hula journey began as a young boy under Kumu Hula Leimomi Ho of Keali‘ika‘apunihonua Ke‘ena A‘o Hula. As a teenager, he joined Hālau Nā Mamo O Pu‘uanahulu, where he trained for 19 years under Kumu Hula William Kahakuleilehua Haunu‘u Sonny Ching. In October 2011, he completed his traditional ʻuniki ceremony, stepping into his kuleana (responsibility) as a Kumu Hula.
With the blessing of Kumu Hula Sonny Ching, the name of our hālau was chosen to honor Kumu Kapua’s Kohala roots, his ʻohana lineage, and the connections to Hālau Nā Mamo O Pu‘uanahulu and the seven Kumu Hula of Papa Maile. Our hālau logo proudly carries this symbolism of lineage, connection, and responsibility.
At Hālau Nā Mamo O Ka Liko Maile O Kohala, our purpose is to preserve and share Hawaiian culture through hula and other cultural practices. We believe hula is more than dance—it is a way of life, a bridge to our ancestors, and a guide for how we live today.
We welcome students of all ages and experience levels who come with open hearts, ready to learn, grow, and honor the traditions of our kūpuna. Our hālau is not just a school—it is a family. Through hula, you will find connection to the ʻāina, to Hawaiian values, and to your own sense of identity and purpose.
Our doors are open—whether you are brand new to hula or have danced for years, if you are committed to the discipline, respect, and joy of hula, we invite you to become part of our hālau ʻohana.
We practice in Keaʻau on the Big Island of Hawai‘i.
Please feel free to reach out for more information—we would love to welcome you into our hālau family.
Mahalo nui loa, and we hope to dance with you soon!
